CarbonFeel
Carbon Footprint Semantics and Calculation Methodology

CarbonFeel not only contributes with knowledge and methodology provided by our associates and participating research centers, we are aware that the incorporation of such knowledge in the information society is vital to meet the goals we have set. The information technologies provide agility in the movement of all data required and which are shared by countless actors when undertaking analysis of life cycle studies of a product or service, and also an emissions inventory in a company.

CarbonFeel provides technology to bring the benefits of an integrated approach, and in addition the related to data quality, or what is the same, obtaining the real carbon footprint of each good or service we consume. This solves one of the great challenges of technical studies related to life cycle analysis, which is to have the opportunity to calculate the real footprint or primary data of each of the links involved in product life cycle processes.

From a computer analyst´s point of view, this problem is merely a deficiency in the communication protocol between the various partners, whose resolution requires addressing two key aspects:

  1. Agreement on the semantics of computation.

  2. Cooperation of the different links of a whole production chain.

CarbonFeel counts with a committee of experts in some measurement methodologies, such as: MC3, input-output analysis, life cycle analysis as PAS 2050, among others, of which the best solutions are used in an integrated approach. All this work is related to adopt some calculation methodologies, the work of semantic analyst is to stabilize these agreements in some electronic dictionaries that provide rules to computer analysts and databases so that they can develop software with ability to calculate the carbon footprint based on these rules, and more importantly, to exchange information between different actors.

If you are interested in finding our semantics of calculation and reporting products, start your journey with section Feel Footprint Electronic Exchange Language (Spanish Link), basic link of a network of collaboration and development of software for calculating and reporting The Carbon Footprint. Later, you might want to know the reports format elaborated by CarbonFeel for our customers, go for it to ReportFeel (Spanish Link), there is a format for each scenario set. BookFeel (Spanish Link) is a tool used in our projects for calculation and reporting, and provides an stable environment based in Feel-standards.

The CarbonFeel initiative recognizes the importance of the information and communication technologies to tackling projects whose ultimate goal is to put the seed in massive lifecycle studies of collaborative nature; studies, whose main handicap, is to enable the intervention of multiple actors (supply companies and consulting teams) that are ultimately the providers of the information required to improve the quality and reliability of the study. So, CarbonFeel incorporates information technologies that address the following challenges, giving answer to the following questions:

  1. How to ensure that all information provided meets the established rules and criteria also avoiding subjectivity of analysts and information providers?.

  2. How to avoid bottlenecks and dilation of project times by lack of cooperation from companies participating in the life cycle study?.

  3. How to ensure that the method promotes data as close to reality as possible avoiding exclusions and omissions in the studies?.

  4. How to promote the exchange of information while ensuring confidentiality of it?.

  5. How to synchronize and align consulting teams on a common technology base?.

  6. How to prepare understandable final reports and Carbon Footprint results, for all non-specialists in the subject such as company management teams and stakeholders?.
